1. Food-Saving Tip: Herb-Infused "Ice" Cubes
Fresh herbs are essential ingredients in any kitchen, but they're not always available fresh, and are usually only sold in large packages. With this tip, however, there's no problem if you can only buy large packages—you can prepare your herb-infused ice cubes weeks in advance with consistently fresh herb flavors. Here's what to keep in mind!
- Use an oil that can withstand the temperature at which you'll use your green herb ice cube cubes. For example, extra virgin olive oil is a great choice if you want to use it for salads, but sunflower oil is more recommended for roasted/grilled vegetables.
- Make sure the oil completely covers the herbs while you're freezing them.
- If you don't have enough space in the ice cube tray, you can freeze the herbs in stages, and transfer the finished cubes to a freezer bag or container.
2. Food-Saving Tip: The Secret to Happy Avocado
Avocado is hugely popular and healthy, but unfortunately it's not the most environmentally friendly to consume in Hungary, as it has to travel quite a distance to reach our tables. So if we're going to buy avocado, let's make sure we don't let it brown, so we don't have to throw it away.
- Once you've cut the avocado, also cut a red or purple onion.
- Place the remaining avocado in a storage container and place the half onion next to it. And voilà, the pair is ready—thanks to it, your avocado won't turn brown. (The sulfur compounds released from the onion slow down the avocado's oxidation, that is, browning)
- As a final step, put it in the refrigerator.
3. Food-Saving Tip: Carrot-Saving Recipe
Do you love carrots too, so you always have a few squished ones in your fridge? Carrot is a wonder vegetable because it can be used for so many things, such as soups, desserts, and main courses. But often they're forgotten until we find them "tired" at the bottom of the fridge. This food-saving recipe makes a renaissance of forgotten, yet all the more valuable carrots possible.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup oats
- 1 egg
- 2 (tired) carrots
- 1 dl milk
- 1 dl water
- 1 tbsp honey
- half packet of baking powder
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, a pinch of salt
4. Food-Saving Recipe: Long Live All Berries
The color, variety, and flavor of berries are endless, so they're found in almost every kitchen when in season. But unfortunately, they can get moldy very quickly. With this trick, however, we give you a foolproof tip against mold.
- Pour 1/3 part vinegar and 2/3 part water into a mason jar, then add the berries.
- Let the berries soak in the mixture for 20 minutes.
- Rinse them off.
- Line the mason jar with a paper towel and put the berries in.
- As a final step, put it in the refrigerator.
5. Food-Saving Tip: Potato Skin Chips
Until now, you've also thrown away potato peels, right? Once you read this tip, which we've driven hundreds of thousands of people crazy with, you'll see the potential hidden in potato peels differently.
- Wash the potato thoroughly, then peel it.
- Cut the potato peels into any strips or cubes you like.
- Season with spices (salt, pepper, paprika if you like it spicy, and any other spices you enjoy)
- Drizzle with a little olive oil.
- Put into a preheated oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes and you're done.
6. Food-Saving Recipe: Nutella Coffee with a Food-Saving Twist
It won't come as a big surprise when we say that Nutella is one of the most beloved sweets around the world. However, it's nearly impossible to use every last drop of hazelnut spread from a Nutella jar. No matter how hard we try, a little always remains. With our last tip, however, we show you a twist that not only saves the leftover Nutella, but also lets you make yourself a delicious coffee or surprise people who matter to you.
- Add ice to a tall glass and pour milk over it.
- Place the Nutella jar under the coffee maker and pour the coffee into it. This way the hot coffee dissolves the remaining Nutella in the jar.
- If necessary, cap the jar and shake it a bit so the coffee "washes away" the Nutella from all sides.
- Pour the Nutella coffee over the iced milk and you're done.
