Organic farming as a concept

Organic farming principles and objectives were established nearly 100 years ago, when agriculture began to become chemicalized. The primary principle of organic farming is to prioritize local resources and ecological processes during production over external resources. The use of substances for plant protection, nutrient replenishment, and additives and auxiliary substances used in processing are strictly regulated. Animals raised in organic farming are not treated with antibiotics, do not receive hormones, and are provided with appropriate living conditions with animal welfare principles in mind. Organic farming excludes all forms of genetic modification and a very important principle is ensuring animal welfare. Therefore, it is significant not only for human health but also for environmental protection.

Hungary and organic farming

In Hungary, the volume of organic farming was not significant until the early 21st century, but this changed in 2014 thanks to the EU budget program. Between 2015 and 2019, more than twice as many farmers in our country engaged in organic-minded agricultural production than in all previous years combined. The Green Deal, which comes into effect after 2021, will bring new momentum, requiring a 25% increase in organic areas by 2030 across the Union – currently this stands at 5.7% here.
