Food waste and menstruation - Taboo topics without taboos!

One-third of food produced globally goes uneaten, which is a serious problem from economic, social, and environmental sustainability perspectives.

One-third of food produced globally goes uneaten, which is a serious problem from economic, social, and environmental sustainability perspectives. Meanwhile, in Europe, approximately 87% of tampons and sanitary pads end up in landfills, where these products—made 90% from plastic—can take up to 500 years to decompose. Munch and This is Redy are now launching a special campaign to draw attention to these two often-taboo global issues.

Starting March 14th, the two brands will showcase the most unusual PMS (premenstrual syndrome—in this case, the heightened appetite and snacking cravings experienced before menstruation) foods in a post series, prepared from food rescue packages. The campaign aims to raise societal awareness about food waste and menstruation-related challenges, and to promote open and free communication.

"I've considered our collaboration with This is Redy close to my heart from the start," says Belayane Najoua, Global PR Manager at Munch. "Both brands are fighting to solve a global challenge that matters to me, and each has managed to create a genuine love brand and a real community around it, which is incredibly valuable in today's world. Because of this, both brands are individually very strong, but I firmly believe in the power of collaborations, and I hope this joint campaign will have an impact that can shape society. Additionally, we can set an example for green companies that it's definitely worth opening up to each other and thinking about shared goals, since we have the same objective: a more conscious and sustainable future."

As part of the collaboration, Munch created a limited edition surprise box called the Énidő Box, available for purchase on the Munch Market website. The limited edition box contains salty and sweet foods frequently consumed during PMS, as well as handcrafted soaps made from natural ingredients—all available at wallet-friendly prices on the site due to their short shelf life, seasonality, or slow turnover. "When assembling the Box, our goal was to ease the often-difficult menstrual period and bundle together ingredients for those weird PMS food pairings and a perfect evening at home," Najoua added.

"It's important to us to collaborate with companies that, like us, think young, world-changing, and innovative solutions. Munch and Redy are great inspirations in sustainability and in showing that it's possible and worthwhile to entrepreneurship at a young age. It's wonderful to see that from the food-saving side, there's openness to educate about menstruation. PMS often makes women crave the strangest foods, and now we're giving a little taste of that together." said Dóra Molnár, founder of This is Redy.

Munch, which has existed for three years, has saved nearly 2 million meals so far, largely thanks to its 130,000-strong online food rescue community. This is Redy, nearly five years old, has sold more than 85,000 products and won the Best Innovative Brand award in 2022. Beyond their core business activities, both companies seek awareness-raising tools that go beyond their own operations, and this collaboration is an excellent example—bringing together two seemingly unrelated yet critically important sustainability and social themes to the widest possible audience, educating not just women directly affected, but society as a whole.
