Hungarian food rescue startup conquers another market - Fighting food waste in four countries!

Starting in March, the Hungarian food rescue startup is joining the battle against food waste in Romania, further strengthening its regional presence. Munch is currently available in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, but plans for this year also include expanding to several other major Romanian cities.

The Munch story - from a studio apartment to 2.5 million packages saved

In the summer of 2020, four young university students created an application in a small Budapest studio apartment to fight food waste. Their goal was to reform Hungarian hospitality and introduce a new sustainability mindset into the daily lives of both restaurant owners and customers. Since then, the startup has come a long way - with the help of 2,000,000 app users, it has saved over 2,500,000 packages internationally. In 2022, the Czech-founded Nesnezeno merged with the company, allowing them to fight food waste with more than 3,500 partners in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Starting this March, the Hungarian food rescue service is now also available in the neighboring country of Romania.

Bucharest as the next stop

According to European Union statistics, approximately 2.2 million tons of food is thrown away in Romania annually. Roughly 30% of this food waste is generated in the hospitality sector, the disposal of which can easily be prevented with Munch's help. Munch's expansion into Romania is not only pivotal for the company's future, but also represents a unique opportunity to significantly reduce food waste in the region and initiate real change in sustainability.
