Although due to many negative experiences a kind of negative legend has attached itself to kiwi in Hungarian horticultural culture, we increasingly hear success stories from experimental and persistent farmers.

People in daily contact with nature and the land began to feel global climate change much earlier than the urban population. This is also shown by the fact that kiwi today grows almost without problems here at home. In Hungary, the most widespread kiwi is the green kiwi, and specifically the Hayward variety – it is generally sweeter and larger than imported Italian or Spanish kiwis, since it doesn't need to be picked before fully ripe. This kiwi can yield roughly 20-25 tons per hectare, in contrast to the yellow kiwi, which can produce as much as 80 tons of fruit per hectare. At the same time, yellow kiwi is one of the market's jewels – the yellow kiwi is the Soreli variety from the University of Udine, a licensed, protected variety, which means that even the plot number of where it's planted must be registered by any farmer who wants to grow it.

Many people stumble at the beginning of kiwi cultivation because due to inadequate horticultural literature, they try to grow it like grapes, but kiwi cultivation is a somewhat easier task. Besides pruning, in the first years you only need to water and weed, and when it develops its canopy, you don't even need to weed underneath it, you only need to apply manure every 3-4 years at most to give the plant a little extra boost. What we also mentioned in the first paragraph is very important: you need to have both male and female plants. If we do everything correctly, the first harvest can come within 4-5 years of planting.

What is kiwi good for?

The uses of kiwi are much broader than one might think – we can make jam, salad, ice cream, baked goods, smoothies, and even wine from it. In Chile, one popular use of kiwi is winemaking, and there are even wineries that have specialized in it.

But as we can see, we don't need to travel to Chile to eat good quality kiwi. Hungarian kiwi reaches us in the same, if not better quality and faster, so next time we buy kiwi, let's look more carefully at where it comes from, because it might be from a county just a few kilometers away.
