In spring, Munch joined Auchan's food-saving initiative. They started with two hypermarkets, but thanks to the enthusiasm of the staff and the success of munch packages, the service was rolled out well ahead of the original timeline and has now been extended to all their stores. Since early May, you can get the three types of munch packages at all Auchan locations for up to 66% off the original price.
Auchan offers the munch package under the brand name "Maradtmég" (Still Left), referencing their year-end campaign that also promoted food rescue. The bakery package contains products worth 1,500 forints and is sold for 500 forints, the vegetable-fruit munch includes vegetables and fruits worth 3,000 forints for 1,000 forints, and the refrigerated mix package worth 6,000 forints, mainly suitable for breakfast or dinner, costs just 2,000 forints. Food nearing expiration and popular items are therefore available with up to 66% discount. The value of the packages and the discounted price will be uniform across all stores, but the products in the packages may vary by store depending on availability. Customers can order the "Maradtmég" packages until 5 PM on the Munch website or app. Packages are typically available for pickup between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM at the Munch pickup points at customer service desks. The Munch website and app will always have up-to-date information on pickup times and inventory.
Experience so far shows that customers love the Auchan "surprise packages" because they sell out almost immediately and feedback has been positive. This is expected to increase, but even with current volumes, 246 million forints worth of food can be saved annually. According to data, the Mix package, which mainly contains refrigerated items, is the most popular, and it often contains excellent quality private label products. The retail chain gives special attention to the vegetable-fruit Munch packages, which can only include products that meet detailed quality standards. The company's goal is to eliminate food waste from vegetables and fruits by 2026.
Thanks to staff enthusiasm and well-organized teamwork, all Auchan stores joined Munch more than a month ahead of schedule. Staff use an internal app to assemble the packages, which include information about potential allergens even for open products.
"Food rescue is the focus of our year – emphasized Ildikó Varga-Futó, CSR Director at Auchan. – This is a complex process ranging from procurement optimization through clearance sales, and munchopping is now part of it."
"The Auchan and Munch partnership is another major step in the fight against food waste in Hungary. Auchan's packages have received positive feedback from shoppers since the beginning, so I'm confident that the newly joining stores will also become very popular. With this cooperation, we've moved one step closer to making food rescue available through Munch at every retail chain across the country..." - added Kirill Perepelica, co-founder of Munch.
