Munch's popularity at PENNY remains strong; over the past nine months, 17,000 shoppers have already saved 41,000 packages from waste on 41,000 occasions, totaling 53,000 packages. Now the retail chain is taking another step toward sustainability, as stores in six counties will join the Munch food-rescue platform on January 29, 2024, followed by six more counties on February 12. By mid-February, every PENNY shopper will be able to purchase vegetable and fruit packages as well as mixed meal packages at discounts of at least 50 percent. By purchasing these packages, shoppers can not only save significant amounts of money but also take action against food waste.
"We are proud that in less than a year we can make PENNY and Munch's cooperation available nationwide. Fortunately, the food-rescue service is becoming increasingly popular among our shoppers, so we are confident that it will have similarly great success in all counties." – said Eszter Kazatsay, PENNY's communications manager in Hungary, about the expansion of the partnership.
PENNY's colleagues and area managers threw themselves into the food-rescue effort with tremendous enthusiasm, for which we, and the food rescuers using Munch, are grateful. Moreover, food rescue has become part of the daily routine among shoppers: 75% of users complete their entire shopping at the given store alongside their Munch purchase. The success of our cooperation with PENNY also proves that food rescue is a particularly effective tool for reducing surplus even in smaller towns, which will now be possible throughout the country starting in February. – said Kirill Perepelica, co-founder of Munch.
How Munch works at PENNY stores
Interested customers can purchase a so-called "surprise package" through the Munch app, which they can pick up at their selected PENNY store during a pre-arranged time window. These packages contain products with short shelf lives or that are still completely suitable for consumption but are in non-standard forms or packaging.
