The vegan lifestyle
In recent years, veganism has become increasingly popular, but many myths still surround it. Unlike vegetarians (who only avoid meat), vegans avoid all animal-derived foods: in addition to dairy and eggs, their diet contains no honey, gelatin, or other ingredients produced using animals. Beyond diet, they also take care not to harm animals: alongside cruelty-free cosmetics, they choose vegan options when it comes to clothing, shoes, or cleaning products.
The environmental impact of a plant-based diet
According to the Vegan Calculator, in just a single day you save 4,164 liters of water, 3 m2 of forest land, and 9 kg of CO₂. This is because animal farming is extremely water-intensive: water is needed not only to feed the animals but also to irrigate the feed they consume. The land used can be reduced in a similar way, as growing plants directly for human consumption requires less space than raising livestock and their feed combined. Deforestation due to animal farming, the transportation and proper storage of meat products, and the carbon dioxide emissions from pesticides used in growing animal feed can all be avoided through plant-based eating.
Vegan = sustainable?
Of course, as a vegan it's also important to pay attention to how and where your food comes from. Instead of exotic fruits from distant parts of the world and ultra-processed foods, it's worth prioritizing seasonal and even locally-sourced products. If you want to go the extra mile in supporting sustainability, you can of course find vegan packages on Munch, with which you're guaranteed to do good for the environment.
