How do we estimate our impact?
Considering munch categories
In the Munch app, you can filter surprise packages according to categories, e.g.: Sandwiches & Café snacks, Desserts, Fruits & vegetables. This not only helps you find your match, but allows us to estimate our impact more accurately.
Reviewing customer photos
Thanks to our Facebook group community, we have many customer photos of food saving packages! Based on these, we determine the usual weight and ingredients of a typical package in each munch category, using AI for a more accurate weight estimation.
Using the magic formula
We based our formula on large sample data on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission of the production and transportation of ingredients (e.g. milk, wheat & rye, etc.). We determined the GHG emission indicator of munch categories considering their usual ingredients. This way we just have to multiply the number of packages sold in each category with the relevant weight and GHG emission indicator.
Reviewing and updating
Since we started saving food on Munch, the package categories evolved, e.g. we introduced the Mixed groceries category when big grocery chains joined. We update the indicators of the categories at least on a biannual basis to keep our estimation up to date.
